Internship Program

The National Great Rivers Research
and Education Center, which is a partnership of Lewis and Clark
Community College, the Illinois Natural History Survey, and the
University of Illinois ACES Department of Natural Resources and
Environmental Sciences, intends to offer student internships for the
summer of 2006. Funds are available for the support of 15-18
students at a rate of $4,000 for a 10-week internship (May 30–August
8, 2006). With the exceptions as noted below, student interns
will be responsible for their own housing and food. Depending on
the nature of the research, students may be required to reside in the
Alton/Godfrey, Ill., Springfield, Ill., or Missouri during the
internship.
Field-based internships will be
available in the following areas:
- River, floodplain and watershed
ecology and management;
- Population and community ecology
of riverine and floodplain biota;
- Environmental education and
communications – including written, spoken, audio and video;
- Archeological education, outreach
and cultural stewardship;
- Economics of river communities and
river resources, viability of nature based tourism; and/or
- Public attitudes or social issues
related to the management of large rivers and their watersheds.
- Special internship programs are
also being considered with the:
- Lieutenant Governor’s office in
Springfield, Ill., working on policy issues involving Illinois
waterwayor with the River Watch program in Alton, Ill.;
- US Army Corps of Engineers at the
Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton, Ill.;
- Missouri Department of
Conservation at various locations in Missouri; and/or
- Science Applications International
Corporation in St. Louis, Mo.
Interns will be instructed and
supervised by faculty from the U of I Department of Natural Resources
and Environmental Sciences, Lewis and Clark Community College and/or
the Illinois Natural History Survey.
- In addition to the specific
faculty requirements, all interns will participate in the following:
- May 30–June 4, 2006, all interns
will be required to participate in a one-week intern orientation in
the Alton area. Housing and two meals per day will be provided for
the orientation week.
- On Aug. 7–8, 2006, all interns and
their faculty advisor will be required to attend a symposium and
make a presentation about their project.
- All interns will prepare a 7-10
page paper and a poster describing their summer internship and
present this information at the symposium.
Students completing the requirements
for the internship may be eligible for course credit through the U of
I Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences or Lewis
and Clark Community College.
